Why Bifold Doors Suddenly Misbehave After a Heat wave

For most of the year, the bifold doors work perfectly well. Then Britain gets three or four properly hot days and something changes.

The doors start catching. The handle feels tighter. One panel suddenly needs a nudge before it will close. By late afternoon, the whole thing can feel noticeably different from the morning.

It is tempting to assume something has broken.

Often, it hasn’t.

Warm weather can expose alignment problems that have been developing unnoticed for months. Aluminium expands as it heats, buildings move slightly and already tight tolerances become tighter still. A bifold system that was only just operating within its adjustment range can suddenly become difficult to use.

It is one reason enquiries about bifold door repairs tend to reveal a familiar story during warmer periods: “It was absolutely fine until the hot weather.”

That description actually tells you quite a lot.

The door hasn’t really changed overnight

A properly fitted bifold system should cope with normal seasonal temperature changes. These doors are designed for external use after all.

The problems usually appear where something was already borderline.

Perhaps one panel had dropped slightly. Maybe a roller was beginning to wear. The frame could have shifted fractionally after several years of movement in an extension.

On a cool day, there was enough clearance for nobody to notice.

Heat removes some of that margin.

Dark aluminium frames can become surprisingly warm in direct sunlight. Anyone who has touched an anthracite grey door or window frame on a hot afternoon will know the difference between that and the air temperature around it.

Materials expand when heated.

We’re talking tiny amounts, not doors suddenly growing centimetres. But bifold systems work with fairly precise gaps between panels, frames, hinges and locking points. Millimetres matter.

A small amount of thermal expansion combined with an existing alignment issue can be enough to turn a perfectly usable door into an irritating one.

That is why the problem can appear so sudden.

The underlying fault often isn’t.

The afternoon test tells you plenty

There is an interesting pattern with some heat-related door problems.

They are worse at 4pm than they are at 8am.

A homeowner opens the doors without difficulty first thing in the morning. The sun spends several hours hitting the rear of the house. By mid-afternoon, the same doors start rubbing or become difficult to lock.

Later that evening, once everything cools down, they improve again.

That is a fairly useful clue.

If a door repeatedly changes behaviour according to temperature, simply replacing the lock is unlikely to address the real problem.

The mechanism might be under additional pressure, certainly. But something else is causing that pressure.

This is where diagnosis matters.

A stiff lock can be a lock fault.

It can also be a perfectly serviceable lock being forced to operate against a door that no longer sits squarely in its frame.

Those are very different repairs.

Modern extensions make the issue more noticeable

The fashion for huge rear openings has changed what we ask doors to do.

A traditional back door is relatively small. A six-panel bifold system can span most of the width of a house.

That’s a lot of material.

It is also a lot of glass, considerable weight and multiple mechanical components that all have to work together.

The popularity of open-plan extensions means there are now plenty of these installations reaching five, eight or ten years old. They have experienced thousands of opening cycles, hot summers, freezing mornings and long periods of Yorkshire rain.

Some have barely moved out of adjustment.

Others haven’t been so lucky.

Part of the difference comes down to installation.

Bifold systems are unforgiving of shortcuts. If the opening isn’t properly prepared, the track isn’t adequately supported or the original adjustment is marginal, seasonal movement eventually exposes it.

Not necessarily during the first summer either.

A system can behave reasonably well for several years before accumulated wear reduces the available tolerances enough for temperature to become noticeable.

Then comes a hot week.

Suddenly everyone is blaming the weather.

Anthracite grey changed things slightly

For a long time, white UPVC dominated British homes.

Then grey arrived.

Anthracite aluminium and UPVC became almost the default choice for contemporary extensions, especially when paired with large glazed doors.

Visually, it works brilliantly.

Thermally, darker surfaces absorb more solar energy than lighter ones. That doesn’t automatically create a problem – properly specified products account for temperature variation – but it can make an existing problem easier to notice.

A south or west-facing set of dark bifolds can spend hours sitting in strong afternoon sun.

If the system is already slightly out of alignment, that’s when rubbing and locking problems can become most obvious.

One thing homeowners sometimes do at this point is start adjusting components themselves according to whichever online video appears first.

Occasionally that works.

Sometimes it leaves the doors beautifully aligned for one particular temperature and considerably worse at another.

Bifold adjustment isn’t just about making a troublesome corner stop rubbing. The panels need to operate correctly as a complete system.

Moving one adjustment point changes something elsewhere.

The handle is where people feel the problem first

Handles get blamed for an awful lot.

Understandably so. They are the part people physically interact with.

If a handle becomes harder to lift, the natural conclusion is that something inside it is wearing out.

Maybe.

But the handle is connected to a locking mechanism that needs to line up correctly with several points around the frame. If the door has dropped or shifted, that mechanism may now be trying to pull everything into position under load.

The homeowner compensates by pulling harder.

Then harder again.

Eventually the handle or internal gearbox really does fail.

At that stage, what began as an adjustment issue has become a mechanism repair as well.

This is a recurring theme with UPVC mechanism problems. The component that finally breaks isn’t necessarily the component that caused the problem.

It was simply the weakest part left in the chain.

Forcing a hot bifold is rarely a good experiment

Everyone does it.

The door doesn’t quite close, so you give it a firmer shove.

Then another.

Maybe lift the handle while pushing the panel with your shoulder.

Success.

Except the same thing happens tomorrow, so the process becomes normal.

That additional force is being transferred somewhere.

It might be going through the hinges. It might be loading the rollers incorrectly. It could be putting excessive pressure through the locking mechanism.

A door shouldn’t need wrestling into position.

If it suddenly does, there is a reason.

The particularly risky situation is where homeowners can see that two components are colliding but continue forcing them past one another.

Metal repeatedly scraping against metal doesn’t tend to heal itself.

Sometimes the weather isn’t responsible at all

This is where things get slightly more complicated.

Hot weather can coincide with increased bifold use.

During a cool April, the doors might open once every few days. During a warm spell, they’re opened in the morning, closed when somebody leaves, opened again at lunchtime, moved when the dog goes outside, closed at night and generally treated as the main route into the garden.

A problem that seemed to arrive with the heat may simply have become noticeable because the doors are suddenly being used ten times more often.

Tracks also collect far more rubbish when doors are left open.

Garden grit is particularly unpleasant stuff for running gear.

Tiny stones find their way into tracks. Soil dries and becomes abrasive dust. Pet hair collects around rollers. Children bring half the garden back through the doorway on their shoes.

Then the doors repeatedly run across it.

There is nothing sophisticated about this particular failure. Expensive bifold systems can be damaged by extremely cheap pieces of gravel.

Don’t drown the track in lubricant

This deserves its own mention because it happens constantly.

A door feels stiff.

Someone reaches for a spray can.

More must be better.

Soon the track is covered in lubricant, which collects dust and grit and creates a lovely sticky grinding mixture for the rollers to travel through.

Lubrication has its place, but it isn’t a substitute for cleaning or mechanical diagnosis.

If the roller is damaged, lubricant won’t rebuild it.

If the panel has dropped, lubricant won’t realign it.

If two locking points no longer meet correctly, lubricant won’t move them back into position.

The same applies to sliding patio doors. When a heavy slider becomes difficult to move, people often assume the track just needs “oiling”.

Sometimes the rollers underneath are already finished.

Expansion can expose installation shortcuts

There is another uncomfortable possibility.

Some doors were never fitted particularly well.

When new, fresh hardware and generous adjustment can disguise a surprising amount. Years later, wear removes that flexibility.

The original weaknesses become visible.

Perhaps the threshold wasn’t supported properly across its full width. Maybe the opening wasn’t completely square. There could have been too little allowance for movement from the beginning.

Large extensions add another complication.

Buildings settle.

Not dramatically in most cases. We’re talking about small changes that are completely normal after building work. But again, bifold systems care about millimetres.

An extension can move fractionally while the original house remains relatively stable. The large door opening sits right where old and new construction meet.

You can see where this is going.

The door gets blamed for everything.

Sometimes the door is merely reporting what the building around it has done.

Summer and winter faults aren’t always the same

A door that struggles exclusively during hot weather presents a different picture from one that becomes difficult during cold, wet periods.

Winter brings moisture, debris, freezing temperatures and seals behaving differently.

Summer introduces heat and thermal expansion.

Then there are doors that misbehave all year.

Those are less mysterious.

If a bifold is stiff in January, stiff in April and worse in August, waiting for cooler weather probably isn’t the solution.

The interesting cases are the genuinely seasonal ones.

They can remain sufficiently functional for nine months of the year that nobody sees any reason to investigate them.

Then the first really warm weekend arrives and the problem comes straight back.

Homeowners remember it from last summer.

“Oh yes. It did this last year.”

That’s usually the point where the weather excuse starts wearing thin.

A little movement is normal, repeated jamming isn’t

There needs to be some common sense around this.

External doors don’t operate in laboratory conditions.

Materials move slightly. Seals become softer or firmer depending on temperature. A tiny change in feel between seasons isn’t automatically evidence of a fault.

Repeated jamming is different.

So is visible rubbing.

Or a handle that suddenly requires significant force.

Or a panel that has to be physically lifted before the locking points engage.

If the door returns to normal once temperatures fall, that doesn’t necessarily mean the issue has disappeared. It may simply mean the available clearance has increased again.

The underlying alignment remains exactly where it was.

Ready for the next hot spell.

Repair usually makes more sense before something breaks

There is an understandable tendency to wait until a door actually stops working.

People have enough household expenses without inventing new ones.

But mechanically, complete failure is rarely the cheapest point to intervene.

If the problem is alignment, addressing it before the lock is repeatedly overloaded can preserve the existing mechanism.

If a roller is beginning to fail, dealing with it before it damages the track is generally preferable.

If the track is contaminated, cleaning it before thousands more opening cycles grind debris through the running gear is hardly controversial advice.

The expensive bit often comes from secondary damage.

That’s true of bifolds, conventional UPVC doors and sliding patio door repairs alike.

The first fault creates resistance.

The owner compensates with force.

Something else eventually breaks.

The evening test is worth trying

There is a simple experiment for any homeowner whose bifolds have started behaving strangely during hot weather.

Don’t adjust anything.

Don’t spray anything.

Don’t start removing screws.

Just pay attention to when the problem occurs.

Try the doors early in the morning while everything is cool. Try them again after several hours of direct sunshine. Then see how they behave later in the evening.

Notice where the resistance occurs.

Does one panel catch at the top?

Does the lead door need lifting?

Does the handle become harder to operate without the door itself becoming harder to move?

Does the entire system feel heavier?

Those details are far more useful than “the bifolds are broken”.

And if there is a clear relationship between direct heat and the problem, mention it when arranging a repair.

It saves a lot of detective work.

The next few summers will probably make this subject increasingly familiar. Britain may not have Mediterranean weather, but hotter spells are perfectly capable of exposing marginal door installations.

There are now huge numbers of large bifold systems fitted to extensions across West Yorkshire, many of them no longer remotely new.

The oldest have already experienced a decade or more of movement and mechanical wear.

So when the next hot afternoon arrives and the kitchen doors suddenly refuse to cooperate, the heat may well be involved.

It just probably isn’t the whole story.
